8th World SBK Round in Donington Park

Jonathan Rea gets the championship leadership

The 5th round of the World SBK championship took place on the 5th, 6th and 7th of July at the legendary circuit of Donington Park, in the United Kingdom. A very special appointment for the two Kawasaki Racing Team riders as they run at home.

During free practice on Friday, Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam finished fourth and fifth respectively. During the FP2 all the pilots improved their times under warm conditions. The pilots of the KRT focused on finding the best configuration for their bikes.

Jonathan Rea won the first race of the weekend, declared wet. After leaving the second position on the grid, he made a perfect performance ending with a gap of more than 11 seconds compared to the second, Tom Sykes. Leon Haslam went to the side of his teammate and after fighting along with Tom Syles and Loris Baz defended the third step of the podium.

After finishing this first race and with two more pending to play, Jonathan Rea took the leadership of the championship for the first time this season.

After Saturday's wet race, on Sunday the drivers ran dry. In the Tissot Superpole race that took place in the morning, Jonathan Rea fought with Tom Sykes for the victory. He managed to overcome it and marked distance until the race ended after a red flag. The engine of another rider broke and oil poured on the track causing several falls, including that of Tom Sykes who after getting second place could not reach the pit lane with his motorcycle and was out of the classification. In this way, Razgatlioglu and Haslam occupied the second and third place.

In the second race, Rea reaffirmed his leadership after fighting with Razgatlioglu taking the third victory of a perfect weekend. Haslam who started from the third position was overtaken by Álvaro Bautista and Alex Lowes, finishing in fifth place.

After finishing this round, Rea is positioned in the first place of the championship with 376 points ahead of Álvaro Bautista with 352. Haslam is fifth with 187 points.

The next appointment will take place next weekend in Laguna Seca, from July 12 to 14.

In parallel, Ana Carrasco also played this weekend another appointment in the SuperSport300 championship. After starting the race, Ana Carrasco saw herself on the ground due to the mistake of another driver in the first lap. The Murcia returned to track but finished nineteenth without getting any points.

It was a very rugged weekend so other candidates for the title did not add points for the championship either. In this way, Ana remains in second position tied to points with the third and fourth place.

They will have another opportunity in Portimao (Portugal) next September 8th.
