An impressive comeback sees Marc Márquez finish in seventh place after starting in twentieth position, while Pol secures another top 10.
The Netherlands Grand Prix started under a cloudy sky that gradually increased, giving way to rain that accompanied the riders in the afternoon. The Repsol Honda team did well to make the most of the morning sessions, which turned out to be crucial as the rain afterwards caused both Marc Márquez and Pol Espargaró to fall off their Hondas and end the day for them.
Pol's weekend got off to a good start in Free Practice 1, staying in the top two for much of the first session. A time of 1'33.183 saw him finish 0.111 seconds from first place, quite satisfied with his first performance at Assen. Then a crash at Turn 5 and subsequent rain meant Espargaró was unable to improve his time in the afternoon, although he still finished second overall on the day.
On the other side of the Repsol Honda Team box, Marc started the day with enthusiasm after his emotional victory in Germany. A productive first session helped Márquez lay the groundwork for what would be the weekend, almost immediately improving his time early in FP2. However, a steep crash at Turn 10 forced # 93 to finish the day early, albeit sparing any major injuries.
Pol Espargaró continued to show the good form in which he is on Saturday, keeping his RC213V consistently within the top ten. The FP3 managed to finish in third place, with a time of 1'32.641. After a very competitive 4 free practice, Espargaró headed into qualifying ready to race, but a poor choice of front tires earned him 11th on the grid.
Marc, for his part, returned to the track for free practice 3, still a bit sore from the day before. In just a few laps, the eight-time world champion had already improved his time on Friday, seeking a place in Q2. Less than 0.2 seconds came between Marquez and a top ten result. Unfortunately, a crash in the final minutes wiped out Marc's chances of advancing to Q2, forcing him to start the next day's race from 20th.
The ninth round of the 2021 MotoGP World Championship was held under clear skies at the historic Assen Circuit, and with good feelings for the two Repsol Honda team riders, who finished the morning Warm Up in the top ten, showing a good pace very promising.
Marc Márquez had an impressive first lap, finishing it in 12th place. In just three laps, Márquez had already recovered a total of ten positions and joined the group leading the race. The constant rhythm of the Cervera rider and several errors by the riders who preceded him made Marc climb to seventh position, after attacking Aleix Espargaró. Finally, he finished in seventh place, quite satisfied that he had recovered no less than 13 positions during the course of the race.
An intense start of the race put Pol Espargaró between the ropes, who struggled to maintain his position in the front group. The one from Granollers stood firm in this fight, settling in 11th place for most of the race. After crossing the finish line in tenth place, Espargaró will start the holidays with 41 points in his pocket.
After a five-week break, the MotoGP World Championship will return to action on August 8 at the Styrian Grand Prix, with the Repsol Honda riders ready to tackle the second half of the 2021 season.
